An artwork from the early 1950s depicting red and white twin dragons glaring at each other in the sky over Mt. Fuji. The piping on the sleeves is red and white to match with the color combination of the dragons, and the body is also pink and red. One of the characteristics in the color combination of vintage Sukajan is that the color of body is normally darker than sleeves, but this jacket has a body of which color is lighter than sleeve, the way known as "opposite color combination”.

The reverse side it has a white tiger roaring on a solid black back ground that contrasts to the other side of jacket. Lot No. TT15173-145 / Late 1950s Style Acetate Souvenir Jacket “ALASKAN FLAG” × “ALASKAN HUSKY”
Reproduction of the Sukajan produced in the late 1950s by Kosho (the predecessor of Tailor Toyo) at the request of the US military and sold at the PX of US military base in Alaska. Among the so-called "Alaska Design" this artwork is particularly rare. It has the popular "lightning and polar bear" on the chest, and many motifs that symbolize Alaska State such as the Aurora, Denali (Mt. McKinley), grouse (state-bird), forget-me-not (state-flower), and totem poles on the back centered on the Alaska state flag.

The reverse side has an Alaskan husky design inspired by the Inuit "dog sledding". From the “49th STATE” notation, you can see that this is a souvenir jacket made to commemorate the elevation of Alaska to America's 49th state in 1959.

The early 1950’s tiger design that Tailor Toyo duplicated first time. This pattern, in which the whole body of a tiger is drawn at an angle from the side, is extremely rare. If you look closely at the ferocious tiger embroidery, which is moderately deformed, you will see the mane being colored with snow white thread, and the eyes, fangs, and claws with bluish-white thread. The elaborate specifications that use the two different white threads are based on the original vintage jackets. In addition, the embroidery of JAPAN in block letters and the larger eagle & tiger embroidery on the chest are highly evaluated in the vintage industry.

The reverse side has an eagle trying to fly away from the cherry tree. The widely-spread wings are depicted vividly by using multi-colored embroidery threads. The cherry blossoms that shine on the navy acetate fabric are very impressive.

The early 1950’s embroidery artwork that Tailor Toyo duplicated first time. The feather of the eagle swooping down to catch its prey is described characteristically by using different brown colors, bright and dull brown. The blue of Mt. Fuji and the pink of the clouds stand out against back ground of the black acetate fabric. The selection of appropriate embroidery thread colors is requisite in duplicating vintage Sukajan at highest level.

The reverse side has a black dragon embroidered on the red body, and the color contrast is attractive. The composition and balance of the dragon, which emerges from the splashing sea and flies through the clouds, is also impressive.

We have a tradition to name the year after one of twelve signs of the traditional zodiac system. 2022 is “the year of Tiger”. This year Toyo releases a special limited edition of Sukajan with two Tiger artworks on each side that were carefully opted from numerous vintage tiger Sukajans.

The artwork on one side is a tiger emerging from a bamboo forest, which is a wonderful composition like a Japanese painting. The combination of tiger and bamboo is traditionally regarded as exquisite. Among the many tiger Sukajans, the tiger embroidered with red colored thread is very rare, and the gradation of green leaves and blue splashes of water is impressive.

On the reverse side it has a tiger “Printed” on sleek acetate fabric. It is still printed by hands using primitive printing machines with printing screens prepared for each color. This requires unimaginable labor and time. Therefore, the number of the jackets produced at that time was not small and, as a result the number of existing jackets now is very little. This is the reason why these jackets have been traded at unbelievably high price among vintage collectors.

The artwork uses many curves lines to describe the intricate hairs of cheek and mane of the tiger. The pupil of eye is emphasized by red color. All the details can’t be expressed properly without the excellent embroidery skills of skilled craftsmen.

On the reverse side it has a tiger of which details are gloriously depicted by the steric effect of embroidery, which requires a high level of embroidery skill. The tiger staring hard at sky is described at rare and unique angle, and colored purposely with navy threads instead of ordinary black. The impressive color contrast of orange and yellow acetate fabric makes this jacket very stylish.

In the spring of 2022 Tailor Toyo releases the new series of aged jackets. So far, we have made our jacket look aged by fading the color of shell fabric which is acetate. In the developing this new series, we stuck to making the jacket “touch and feel” like authentic vintage jackets, not only making it look like them, by using proper materials and thread colors to create more natural aged-texture that is normally created by over-year wearing.

The jacket is made based on the vintage jacket that a US soldier who stationed in Vietnam for the war from 1966 to 67, obtained in Vietnam and brought back to the United States with him. Made of the aged, supple rayon/cotton twill fabric, with cuff-button shaped like an old-coin. It has the Japanese character “福” (means Happiness or Fortune) and a tiger head embroidered on the chest, and the Vietnam on the back side, and dragons on the sleeves. They are depicted in pale colors.

In the spring of 2022 Tailor Toyo releases the new series of aged Sukajan. So far, we have made our jacket look aged by fading the color of shell fabric which is acetate. In the developing this new series, we stuck to making the sukajan “touch and feel” like an authentic vintage jacket, not only making it look like, by using proper materials and thread colors to create more natural aged-texture that is normally created by over-year wearing.

This jacket is a rare type among many vintage sukajans, of set-in sleeves, with self-fabric collar, buttoned-cuffs and shirring bottom. Made of the aged, supple rayon/cotton twill fabric. The motif of the embroidery is nostalgic landscape of Japan, including symbolic icons of the country such as Mt. Fuji, dragon, five-storied pagoda, taiko-bridge, and dears standing in the background of pine trees. They are depicted in pale colors.

“VIETNAM DRAGON”

It is made based on the vintage jacket that a US soldier who stationed in Vietnam for the war from 1967 to 68, obtained in Vietnam and brought back to the United States with him. The flags of USA and the South Vietnam are embroidered on the chest. Another distinctive feature of this jacket is that the design of dragons on the both sleeve and back are all same, which is very rare for the Viet-jan. The font for “viet-nam” is also unique.

The shell fabric used is cotton twill, and the lining is acetate twill fabric. The button for cuff is shaped like an old-coin. All the details are duplicated true to ones of the original vintage.

“ROARING TIGER” × “JAPAN MAP”

A jacket made in the early 1950s that depicts a tiger roaring to a crescent moon in the sky. This jacket has several distinctive features, one is the embroidery threads used for the clouds, which is white color thread but partly dyed into blue. Another one is color of the knit rib. The color usually differs between surface and reverse side, but this jacket has same color for the both sides.

The reverse side has a Japan map embroidered with colorful threads. Since many of the city name in the map are of the Tohoku (northern part of Japan) region, it could be a Sukajan made especially for U.S. military bases in the area. By the 38-degree line of the Korean Peninsula on the jacket, it can identified as a product made during the Korean War.

A jacket made in the mid-1950s that depicts an eagle gliding with its wings opened widely, features the beauty of blue color gradation created by combination of different shades of blue colored threads and the acetate fabrics.

On the reverse side it has a greenish dragon running up through clouds and cherry blossoms. The “rising dragon” has been considered as an auspicious design and appreciated in Japan. The impressive color contrast of red and blue acetate makes this jacket very stylish.

The detail of the black tiger is gloriously depicted by the steric effect of embroidery, which requires a high level of embroidery skill.

The motif of the reverse side is Hawaiian landscape. Is a mountain behind the palm trees the Diamond Head? In the 1950s Hawaii had flourished as a resort area and Hawaiian shirts became popular. US had experienced an oriental boom. This jacket seems to symbolize such golden age of Hawaii.
